Day 1: Today was the first day of our 3 day city experience. We gathered at Strathmore station and caught the train in to Flinders street station. Then, we met with our coordinators and the rest of the students, we made our way to the Shrine of remembrance. We learnt all about the first war, and the significance of it, our guide took us through all the gory details and what the soldiers went through. I was captivated by what we were told, to think what those young men went through and what they risked for our country today is beyond horrific. I'm glad we went to the shrine as one of the activities, lest we forget.
After eating a maccas meal in ten minutes flat, which normally takes me 20, 9D1 set off to Urban Seed. Homelessness has always been a topic that I've been interested in, in primary school I was involved in many fundraisers to fight youths on the street (believe it or not). I liked the Urban Seed experience, because the girl speaking to us was honest, and didn't shy away about anything. We concluded our visit with Bianca,at Cafe Crede (I don't think thats right, I forgot the name) it's a place where the richest of business men and homeless people can sit down and eat lunch together in a friendly environment.
Day 2: We met up at federation square, this mornings activities included a scavenger hunt, we put ourselves into groups of mainly four. unfortunately for the rest of our group members, me and Ellen had money to spend, so we divided our scavenger hunt time in half to go shopping, but we still did get some answers! The weather was beautiful, windy, cold, wet, raining, everything you want when you have to wear a skirt.
Thankfully, due to the cold we didn't get to go on the art tour around the city, walking around in school shoes looking at paint does not appeal to me at all. So, we went to ACMI instead, I was intrigued by how many places I could hide and play apps on my phone, but the things they had on show were actually really cool. That concluded the second day.
Day 3: Today we took a self defence class, the girls was at Strathmore uniting church. And for once I was early!! We could only go over so much in the little time we had, so our instructor went over the basics, such as the groin kick, one of the only things girls have on their side in the event of an attack. We learnt a lot from Gabby (the instructor) she opened my eyes on how vulnerable we really are, and attacks can happen at any time and at any place. We then got a visit from two police officers from the Monee Ponds police station, they spoke to us about the dangers of sexting and alcohol, a common occurrence among teenagers these days. We then spoke with Rory, and a few teachers about being 'different' and how much judging goes on in high schools and such. That concluded the three day city experience.
Mums 44 dollars was defiantly worth it, because it was so much more better than school. It did teach me very important things, street smart wise, and general knowledge. The whole experience was overall really fun.
