First day: we all went to the Shrine of Remeberance and learn all about World War I, and Australia's role in it. It was surprising how much about WWI we learnt. From there we walked all the way down St Kilda Rd to Fed Square. We had lunch and then went over to a baptist chuch in Collins St and learnt about the stereotypes and attitudes towards homeless people. We then took a look at their cafe and listened to our speaker talk about what Urban Seed is doing to help homelessness and how it's enforcing equality between classes of people. Then I went home.
Second day: our group went on a scavenger hunt through the CBD to try and find some of the iconic and unique landmarks and buildings of Melbourne, such as Flinders St Station, Bourke St Mall. It was interesting how easy it was to find my way around the city. I also learnt that cars aren't allowed through Bourke St. Thankfully, we didn't have to do the Street Art component of the City Experience due to the weather. Instead, we went to the Australian Centre of the Moving Image (ACMI). We observed all different types of light-illusions, as well as the evolution of modern technology over the last 30-40 years. There was also a display of various video games such as PES9, Space Invaders and Pong. Then I took the tram home.
Third day: we didn't go to the city on the third day; I arrived at school like normal in casual clothes, but at 9.20 we had to meet at the theatrette. We had a martial arts master called David come in to show us the basics of self-defense. It was intriguing to hear some of his techniques. Next we went to the Strathmore Uniting Church to hear about the dangers of "sexting" from the Moonee Ponds police force. We watched a short film, and then the police officers answered questions about the topic. They stated that 95% of all their work stems from cyber bullying and sexting. This means that if these officers were working even 20 years ago, I don't think they would've had much to do. We had Domino's pizza for lunch, and then had group discussions about certain topics that concern teenage-hood.
It was great fun visiting the city and hopefully we go again next year.
